General Information
Concert Orchestra
Membership in the new Concert Orchestra will be open to players of the violin, viola, cello, and bass only. Musicians should be in grade 8 or younger, and should be playing music equivalent to that of Suzuki Method, Volume 2 or 3. (Players of wind, brass, and percussion instruments, as well as older or more advanced students have the option of auditioning for the other two orchestras in our organization. Please see more information below.) Students in the Concert Orchestra should have some proficiency in reading music and should be of sufficient behavioral and emotional maturity to concentrate and cooperate during a weekly, one hour rehearsal. The Concert Orchestra will introduce young musicians to orchestral playing, using elementary level music that is selected to enable students to learn to listen to one another in an ensemble setting, understand and respond to conducting, and to play separate parts in harmony. The main purpose of the orchestra is NOT to teach musicians how to play their instruments-students are expected to continue to take weekly private lessons and/or group lessons for individualized instruction on their specific instruments.
Rehearsals will take place each week on Sundays from 3:30 - 5:00 pm from September through May, with time off for traditional school holidays. Typically the orchestra rehearses in Lilly Hall on the campus of Butler University. The Concert Orchestra will participate in 3 concerts per year as part of the New World Youth Orchestras concert series. Tuition will be
$225.00 for the year.
Placement in the orchestra is by audition. Past repertoire includes:
Themes from the Moldau, B. Smetana, arr. R. Frost
Finlandia, J. Sibelius, arr. R. Phillippe
Jupiter, G. Holst, arr. D. Monday
Orpheus in the Underworld, J. Offenbach, arr. S. Dackow
Allegro in D Major, G. Telemann, arr. M. Dowty
