PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA

The Philharmonic Orchestra is open to intermediate players of strings, brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.   Students in the Philharmonic Orchestra should have excellent proficiency in reading music, and should be of sufficient behavioral and emotional maturity to concentrate and cooperate during a weekly, two hour rehearsal.  The Philharmonic Orchestra is an intermediate orchestral experience, intended for students who have had at least some previous orchestral or ensemble experience.  Music selected is that of a typical high school orchestra level; past repertoire is included below.  There are also opportunities to participate in chamber ensembles, and compete in our annual concerto competition, which is only open to members of the orchestra.  Guest clinicians and master class coaches who are members of the Indianapolis Symphony, and Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra work with the students occasionally throughout the year.  Participation in the Philharmonic Orchestra is not intended to replace school or private music lessons.  Students are expected to continue to take weekly private lessons and participate in their school ensembles.

Rehearsals will take place each week on Sundays from 1:00 - 3:00 pm from September through May, with time off for traditional school holidays.  Typically the orchestra rehearses in Lilly Hall on the campus of Butler University  The Philharmonic Orchestra will participate in 3 concerts per year as part of the New World Youth Orchestras concert series.  Annual tuition will be $325.00  Limited scholarships are available in cases of financial need.

Placement in the orchestra is by audition.  Past repertoire includes:
"    Findlandia, J. Sibelius
"    Flying, R. Burns (winner of 2001 ASTA/NSOA Composition Contest)
"    On the Beautiful, Blue Danube, J. Strauss
"    Hopak, M. Mussorgsky, arr. By C. McAlister
